The Nebraska Independent Auto Dealers Association (NIADA) offers Board-approved pre-licensing and continuing education courses to help independent auto dealers meet Nebraska licensing requirements and stay compliant with state law.

Approved Courses & Documentation
All education must be authorized by the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. Proof of completion must be submitted with your license application or renewal and typically includes a certificate of completion or other Board-approved verification.
NIADA courses are designed to meet these requirements and provide practical, Nebraska-specific instruction.
Exemptions
The education requirements do not apply to:
Dealers whose primary business is selling salvage vehicles on behalf of insurance companies
Dealers who only buy and sell manufactured homes
Dealers who only buy and sell trailers
Franchised new motor vehicle dealers and their employees

When do the education requirements begin?
The pre-licensing and continuing education requirements take effect January 1, 2026.
Who must complete pre-licensing education?
Anyone applying for a new Nebraska motor vehicle dealer license who is not otherwise exempt must complete 8 hours of approved pre-licensing education.
Who must complete continuing education?
Dealers renewing a Nebraska motor vehicle dealer license must complete 4 hours of approved continuing education, unless exempt.
How often is continuing education required?
Continuing education must be completed within the 12 months immediately preceding license renewal.
What qualifies as approved education?
Education must be authorized by the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. NIADA courses are structured to meet these approval standards.
How do I prove completion?
You must submit proof of completion with your license application or renewal. NIADA provides certificates upon successful course completion.
Are online courses allowed?
Course format (in-person or virtual) is subject to Board approval. NIADA will clearly identify approved delivery methods for each course.

During the 2024 Legislative Session, the Nebraska Legislature passed Legislative Bill LB484, which updated education requirements for motor vehicle dealer licensing in Nebraska. These changes establish mandatory pre-licensing and continuing education requirements for certain dealers and are intended to improve regulatory compliance and professional standards within the industry.

The education requirements established under LB484 become effective January 1, 2026.
New Dealer License Applicants
Any individual or entity applying for a new Nebraska motor vehicle dealer license must complete:
Eight (8) hours of approved pre-licensing education within the 12-month period immediately preceding the license application.
This pre-licensing education is designed to ensure that new dealers understand Nebraska laws, regulatory obligations, and best practices before beginning dealership operations.
Dealer License Renewal
To renew an existing Nebraska motor vehicle dealer license, a dealer must complete:
Four (4) hours of approved continuing education within the 12-month period immediately preceding the license renewal application.
Continuing education is intended to keep licensed dealers informed of changes in state law, regulations, compliance requirements, and industry standards.
All pre-licensing and continuing education must be authorized by the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board.
Dealers must submit documentation of completed education with their license application or renewal. Acceptable documentation generally includes a certificate of completion or other verification as prescribed by the Board.
The pre-licensing and continuing education requirements do not apply to the following dealer categories:
Dealers whose primary business is selling salvage vehicles on behalf of insurance companies
Dealers who only buy and sell manufactured homes
Dealers who only buy and sell trailers
Franchised new motor vehicle dealers and employees of franchised new motor vehicle dealers
Organizations or entities seeking to provide dealer education for credit must obtain approval from the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. Approved education programs must demonstrate value to licensed dealers and include appropriate attendance tracking and instructional materials.
